What is an ACEO and why they are long term investments to be collected
Artist trading cards (or ATCs) are, generally 2 1⁄2 by 3 1⁄2 inches sized miniature works of art about the same size as most modern sport trading cards. They are sized to fit inside standard card collector pockets, sleeves or sheets. The ATC movement developed out of the mail art movement and has its origins in Switzerland. Cards are produced in various media, including dry media (pencils, pens, markers, etc.), wet media (watercolor, acrylic paints, etc.), paper media (in the form of collage, papercuts, found objects, etc.) or even metals or fiber. The cards are usually traded or exchanged. When sold, they are usually referred to as art card editions and originals (ACEOs).
M. Vänçi Stirnemann is credited in many circles with popularizing the modern artist trading card in 1996, holding trading sessions in Zurich, Switzerland. This resurgence of interest in the cards spawned the ACEO (Art Cards, Editions and Originals) movement. An offshoot of artist trading cards are Art Cards, Editions and Originals (ACEOs), which originated when some artists began to create cards to sell, in addition to trading among themselves. Many ACEOs are sold online in internet auction sites, such as statsworldcollectibles.com. ACEOs are small versions of original works of art, or editions of small prints, produced by artists themselves who often add their autographs with the purchased item and information on the number of those produced and sold which add instrinsic value and suggests that if the information as to the number provided were wrong this would discredit the artist that has more interest in keeping his or her reputation for long term credibility than short term commercial gains.
The advantage for the artist is an exposure to collectors outside of art collectors, art galleries - auctions, of their works in a low cost marketing capacity for them. Essentially this turns artists into entrepreneurs and shows would be buyers of their original works what they are capable of and have in inventory.
The advantage for buyers of ACEOs is having an item that takes little to no storage space, allows them to have an original, often number limited, autographed art piece that becomes more valuable over time especially when those ACEOs are works direct from artists who are not commercially selling masses of those items. Even if that were the case those items would not have the signature of the artists on them per say. It also allows collectors who admire the work done by the artist to market their admiration to those around them who would buy the art of that admired artist and has in a comparable way the value to collectors that a novelist signed in person book would have.
In many ways ACEOs are like 2nd edition books, cards, reprinted photos etc. They are a cheaper version of the same love first editions....except they come with an original autograph which makes all the difference. They allow new less known artists to get known and the more they are known through them the more the value of the ACEOs and their artwork increases in value.
These truths being self evident ACEOs are now to the marketplace what sports cards were after their first 20 years in the marketplace. At the time few saw long term value in them and decades later these same people wish they had jumped on the collectors bandwagon. If one receives an ACEO signed by the artist an art oriented investor, art collector, trading card collector should and must see the great long term investment they are. Besides, its a bigger risk paying high amounts for huge artworks of less known artists than getting the benefits with several versions of their work that are jewels to collectors...scarce, autographed and direct from the source. The beauty of buying direct from the artist or an auction site that allows them to become entrepreneurs of their self created work is that compared to other pieces of art how many times can collectors have direct contact with their admired craft people and idols. ACEOs are by all accounts underestimated collectible items at low risk amounts of investment.
Statsworldcollectibles.com staff have always had the intention, before the creation of this site to create a marketplace where collectors and new artists - collectible entrepreneurs could meet up and build a rapport, reputation at lower cost to them in a way that has worldwide exposure and marketing written all over them.
